Yet Tobacco Consumption Rises

The government has managed to influence to decrease cigarette sales from 21.1 billion packs in 2000 to 17.4 billion in 2007 through high taxation and education. But the sale of other tobacco products is going on to increase due to the equivalent of more than a billion packs of cigarettes based on nicotine and tobacco content.

The overall reduction in cigarette sales counts to 18%, but about 30% has been compensated by the use of tobacco in other forms. The alternative tobacco products: roll-your-own tobacco, moist snuff and small cigars rose by 714 million, 256 million, and 130 million cigarette pack equivalents and large cigar sales increased by 37%. Chewing and pipe tobacco and dry snuff were not in the research due to their declining use.

While the shift in tobacco consumption patterns is not clear, study authors caution that non-combustible tobaccos may be safer but any kind of tobacco use is likely to run the danger of health.

Indoor clean air and cost acts have probably influenced what type of tobacco products people, especially among teens, are choosing. On top of state cigarette taxation – 39-cent federal tax per pack. Smokeless and roll-your-own tobaccos are usually taxed at only 5% to 10% the rate of cigarettes, with only a 4 cent tax on a package of small cigars.

National campaigns accentuate the deadly risks people are exposed to no matter what kind of tobacco products they use. Also they claim all forms of tobacco should be taxed equally to help reduce the risk of smoke related disease and death.

The American Heart Association reports that about 20.7 million women and 25.9 million men in the United States smoke, and smoke-related deaths will kill nearly 450,000 people per year.
