The Unlikely Political Activists want to bring smoking back to some Washington clubs

World Health Organization approved the smoking ban in Washington last year. But not all people especially smokers were agreed with this new legislation.

A group of political activists observed this and they decided to bring smoking back to some Washington businesses and clubs.

They began to collect signatures from inhabitants for a statewide initiative proposal that would allow smoking in private clubs, cigar bars and tobacco shops. These political activists have to gather about 225,000 signatures by the end of June.

Joe Arundel, an owner of Rain City Cigar in Seattle, said: "In other states, when they passed this type of legislation, they usually make exceptions for a few places."

Arundel added: "Voters didn't want to be unintentionally exposed to secondhand smoke. And the initiative we've crafted here would not do that."

Carrie Nyssen, advocacy director for the American Lung Association of Washington, admitted: "The authors may have thought it was going to be narrow. But we're really afraid that the private club exemption could create some unintended consequences that bars could take advantage of."

This new legislation would put employees of those establishments, where people can smoke, back at risk of breathing dangerous fume. Nyssen said: "Our position is all workers deserve protection from secondhand smoke."

The unlikely political activists Campaign collect enough signatures to make the statewide ballot unless they can afford to hire signature gatherers, and this one cannot be enough to change something.

"This is as grass roots as you get," Arundel said.

According to the initiative, in order to qualify as a cigarettes bar, the business' food sales must be incidental and it needs to generate at least $25,000 in annual sales of cigarettes. Promoters have distributed petitions in smoke shops, clubs and former cigarettes bars.
