WORKERS at Vale Royal Borough Council have asked for permission to build a smoking shelter at their headquarters in order for them to enjoy a cigarette in their own time."We are in full support of no-smoking legislation and are keen to support employees to give up smoking," said a spokesman."However, we have to accept that a small percentage is still smokers and there is a need for limited provision of outdoor shelter for these staff.
"The council is very clear that employees are only allowed to smoke in their own time, which is before and after work or in their lunch break."In June, the Government banned smoking in enclosed public places in what critics believe was an attempt to stub out the habit. The law led to a raft of planning applications mainly from pubs and restaurants for smoking shelters of various shapes and sizes.
Vale Royal Borough Council wants to build a glass shelter at their offices at The Drumber.Borough councilor Malcolm Gaskill said he felt smokers should be given the option of having a cigarette. He said: "I have to declare an interest in this being a smoker myself but I think people should be allowed to have a cigarette if they want to."I think everyone should be able to take 10 minutes in a morning and afternoon anyway just to get outside and have a bit of fresh air and a walk.
"If people want to use that time to have a cigarette then that is up to them."The borough council is operating a 30-metre no-smoking zone around all council owned buildings. In Winsford that includes the civic hall and sports complex as well as the council headquarters.Clr Gaskill added: "The full council has not given approval for this exclusion zone and it does seem a bit onerous to me.
"This includes the civic hall and all other buildings not just Wyvern House."I don’t know how people are supposed to know how far 30 meters is though."
