Government set to introduce legislation on October 1, 2007

The legal minimum age for buying cigarettes is set to rise from 16 to 18, the government has announced.

The new legislation, due to come into effect on October 1, 2007, is designed to make it easier for retailers, including pubs that sell tobacco, to spot underage smokers.

Ministers also hope it will reduce the number of teenagers who get addicted to nicotine. Currently around nine per cent of 11 to 15 year-olds smoke.

Smoking is dangerous at any age, but the younger people start, the more likely they are to become life-long smokers and to die early," public health minister Caroline Flint said in a statement.

A campaign to raise awareness of the new minimum age for purchasing tobacco will be launched early this year.
